Black Mirror: S3E1 "Nosedive"

This episode of Black Mirror displayed an interesting perspective on how media effects humanity, if you can even call them that. The individuals that are part of this reality have special digital contacts to navigate and connect with others. In theory it might not be a terrible idea, but as we see our protagonist, Lacie, try to maneuver her way through this life, it's not all sweet. In this reality how others perceive you and rate your very existence controls a multitude of things from your career, to your housing, and your social standing. Lacie must keep a facade of friendliness and pleasantry in order to keep herself at a high rating to achieve the best in life. However, in the wake of certain irritations that most of us in our reality face, she expresses genuine human emotions of frustration, sadness, and anger. These emotions are seen as unpleasant in their reality and therefore cause Lacie to dive further and further into this abyss. Although our world hasn't reached a point of this magnitude we do seem to hold those with a larger following and a higher "rating" in society up on a pedestal. I knew someone who told everyone they knew to 'like' her posts on Instagram every time she posted just to keep her numbers going higher. As impressive and advanced their technology was in this episode I would never want it to take over basic human emotion and connections.
